Oromocto, NB - 2007.05.31 - Boys and girls from Fredericton, Oromocto, Lincoln, New Maryland, Gagetown, Minto, Geary, Chipman, McAdam and surrounding areas will converge at the Waasis Road Track & Field, in Oromocto, NB on June 6, 2007 at 5 PM to take part in the Hershey’s Track and Field Games.
The Hershey’s Track and Field Games provides a level playing field for young people, regardless of athletic ability. The program helps children of all athletic abilities develop basic running, jumping and throwing skills. Any boy or girl 9 - 14 years from any New Brunswick community is eligible to participate in the Oromocto event.
Events will include the 50 meter dash, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, 4x100 meter relay, standing long jump and softball throw.
The top five (5) participants from each of the 42 events of the Oromocto meet will be invited to participate in the provincial championships on Saturday June 16 in Saint John, NB.
Provincial meet winners are then invited to compete in the Hershey Atlantic Finals to be held in Dieppe on July 8. A team is then selected to travel to Hershey, Pennsylvania, all expenses paid, to compete in the North American Final, held between August 2 and 5, 2007.
400,000 boys and girls from our 10 provinces and 3 territories and all 50 US states participate in the Hershey Youth Program every year. In Canada, the program is sponsored by Athletics Canada and receives the support of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
The Hershey’s Track & Field Games is designed to encourage physical fitness among youth and emphasize participation and sportsmanship. The philosophy of the program stresses participation, fun, fellowship and personal development. It strives to encourage young people to participate and reach their potential while developing a sense of accomplishment.
